We blind taste test and compare 34 frozen chips from Woolworths, Coles, McCain, Birds Eye and more to find the best.

Products

We tasted air-fried frozen chips that are available at major supermarket chains like Coles, Woolworths and Aldi. Price is based on the price in stores in April 2024. Our panel sampled 34 products in total, including five beer battered varieties, seven crinkle cut, six shoestring and 16 straight-cut/other style frozen chips.

Tasting

A panel of four judges tasted the frozen chips ‘blind’ (without knowing the brands) in a randomised order.

Scores

This CHOICE score, our overall, is made up of sensory attributes (90%) and nutrition (10%). Sensory attributes include flavour (50%), texture (30%), appearance (10%) and aroma (10%). The nutrition score is entirely derived from the Health Star Rating, which is calculated from the label and details in the nutrition information panel and converted to a percentage. Weightings are in brackets.

We recommend frozen chips with a CHOICE score of 80% or more.

She has a degree in food science and nutrition and a master's degree in nutrition and dietetics, and she's also studied business.
