CHOICE experts are warning Australians to avoid ‘sleep shonks’ this winter and giving advice on how to get a good night’s rest. CHOICE’s independent lab tests even found one $4399 mattress was beaten by a $499 competitor.
“Products that promise to give you a good night’s sleep have long been a feature of CHOICE’s lab testing and investigations,” says Chris Barnes, product testing expert at CHOICE.
“Marketing claims promising a better night’s sleep are everywhere, but the evidence in many areas is lacking. In 2018 CHOICE gave Bioglan a Shonky award for useless homeopathic sleep tablets, and the 2020 Shonkys featured a ‘sleep survey’ used to sell expensive mattresses. Sleep shonks are everywhere, so this year CHOICE wants to help you improve your sleep without getting ripped off.”

1. Track your sleep and routine
Track what you eat, drink or do in the hours before bed. Consider using a smartwatch or fitness device with sleep tracking functionality to collect data.
2. Speak to your doctor
Having problems with sleep, snoring or energy levels? These issues can have a range of root causes, so investigate with your doctor before buying quick fix products.
3. Pricey mattresses and pillows aren’t always better

4. The evidence for weighted blankets isn’t there
There’s limited evidence that weighted blankets actually help you sleep. For the cost, you could be missing out on other helpful interventions.

An air purifier may improve the air quality in your home, but that’s only helpful if that’s what is affecting your sleep – and some can be noisy! There’s limited evidence behind humidifiers improving sleep.

Buying products to fix your sleep is like a game of whack-a-mole. Sleep problems can have a wide range of root causes. While some products could help in specific circumstances, speak to a doctor, not a salesperson, and see if you can identify the root causes.

Do the pillow test every six months:
Test your pillows with our simple four-step method to ensure your pillows are still in good condition.
1. Put your pillow on a flat surface and fold it over in half.
2. Put a sports shoe on top.
3. If the shoe flies off as your pillow bounces back into its original shape, your pillow is in top form.
