Optus broadband review

Optus is one of Australia’s largest internet plan providers, but how does it compare to the rest of the market? We took the top providers and compared how fast their NBN speeds are, as well as customer satisfaction.

Looking to switch providers? Check out our round-up of the best NBN plans.

How fast are Optus NBN plans?

The ACCC’s NBN monitoring program records the internet speeds of Australian providers thanks to more than a thousand volunteers.

We take their data, published quarterly, and apply a scoring methodology to reveal which NBN providers are the fastest for a given plan and connection technology.

At the end of each financial year, we combine the ACCC’s speed data with our most recent satisfaction survey to figure out which internet service providers (ISPs) are the best in Australia.

The graph below includes a tab comparing overall speed scores for FY21–22.

Over this period, Optus scored 93%, putting it among the fastest NBN providers on average.

Why we’ve partnered with WhistleOut

We’ve partnered with search engine WhistleOut to help you find and buy the right plan for you. The ‘compare plans’ links in the above table will take you to their site. How happy are Optus customers?

Optus customers aren’t very satisfied with their home broadband service. In our 2023 ISP satisfaction survey, Optus came second last with a score of 69%.

This score comes after the company’s high-profile data breach in 2022, but it should be noted that its 2021 satisfaction score (before the breach) was 71%, which isn’t much better.
