Bad points
Confusing process to add regular users as first three users must be admin users Physical key access located on the bottom surface of the lock -- it can be hard to access Physical installation instructions do not have clear details Cable management during installation can be difficult Has an app, but can not be used to open the door, only to access logs and manage remote visitor access Internet connection needed (not just Wi-Fi) to action remote unlock requests
Phone number needed during setup Setup requires the use of an app
Has an app, but can not be used to open the door, only to view logs, receive push notifications, and issue temporary codes Large mortice lock that is best installed by a professional Installation instructions were not clear enough
Batteries do not have charging indicators on them Emergency power connectors are awkward to use Setup requires the use of an app Very fiddly cable management due to three wires that have to be plugged in Alexa and Google Home integrations did not work Phone number needed during setup
Internet connection required to operate the lock with the app if the app has been closed since the last successful connection
Auto-lock is 3min by default and changing the setting (to 30sec) did not have any effect Setup requires the use of an app Mounting plate screws were very tight Fiddly cable management Alexa integration did not work and Google Home was very inconsistent

Can't be opened with a physical key Android app did not work at the time of testing; iOS did work Short unlock range using app
Tester comments
This is a mortice lock that can be tricky to install due to the number of parts at play -- best left to an experienced installer; lock can be set up and operated without the use of an app, but if you choose to use the app, you will be able to assign users, view logs, and give access to temporary users; lock can be opened using fingerprint, PIN, or key fobs (two supplied); if power is lost, a physical key can be used, or a power bank and a micro-USB cable
This is a deadlock that can be operated using an app (via Bluetooth), or via PIN; the app must be used to set it up; if power is lost, it can be opened using a physical key
The Philips EasyKey 7000 Series is a large mortice lock (41cm) that would look and work best on a suitably large door. In addition to having a keypad, there's a fingerprint reader hidden behind the handle, as well as a camera at the top for face recognition. A mechanical key can be used if the lock smarts are inoperable, with the barrel located at the bottom of the lock next to the USB port for emergency power. An app is available, but doesn't actually control the lock; it can access logs and let you assign names to registered user codes and biometrics. To set up the lock, you must use its keypad and follow the instructions. The lock opened swiftly in our tests, and the face recognition worked well, even in darkness. Dual unlock can be set up so that two of the three access methods have to be used to unlock the door. Installation should be carried out by a professional or experienced D-I-Yer.
Lockly's Vision Elite Video Smart Lock is a multifunctional device that acts as a smartlock, doorbell, and security camera. It's a relatively fiddly device to install because it includes multiple cables, one of which is to the solar panel that can charge the lithium ion battery that powers the lock. It also ships with a second battery so that you can have one ready to go when needed. If you ever get caught out, then a 9V battery can be held to the external contacts to power up the lock temporarily. A bridge ships with the lock, which allows it to sit on Wi-Fi, so you can unlock and lock it from wherever you are. The lock itself has a keypad, a fingerperint reader, and a concealed mechanical lock behind the solar panel. The Lockly app wasn't always responsive in our tests, and we also found that the touted Alexa and Google Assistant integrations didn't work.
This is a deadlock that can be operated using an app (via Bluetooth) or PIN; it can be set up from the keypad directly, without the use of an app; if power is lost, it can be opened using a physical key, or a power bank and a micro-USB cable
Eufy's S231 smartlock sits on Wi-Fi and can be controlled locally or remotely through the Eufy Security app. Unlock actions include PIN, fingerprint, or mechanical key (via the concealed lock on the front), as well as a long press of the unlock icon in the app. The app also allows for the lock's settings and users to be managed easily. Some of the lock's features didn't work as intended, such as the autolock duration, which didn't budge from 3min. While Alexa and Google Assistant support is touted, they both couldn't unlock the S231 either through voice or button press. It has a rechargeable lithium battery, which needs to be removed for charging; if it runs out of juice, the lock can be activated externally by a powerbank using microUSB.
The Eufy Video Smart Lock E330 is also a doorbell and security camera. You can use the Eufy Security app to see who comes knocking, unlock the door, and also check any events that the camera may have caught in its field of view. Unlock actions also include PIN and fingerprint, as well as a mechanical key, with the lock's barrel concealed behind the moveable doorbell button. If you desire, this smart lock can be integrated in Alexa and Google Assistant environments, and both worked well in our tests. It has a rechargeable lithium battery, which needs to be removed for charging; if it runs out of juice, the lock can be activated externally by a powerbank using USB-C.
This is a latch lock that is as large as a mortice lock, so installation is a little more involved than a deadbolt lock; it can be operated using fingerprint, PIN, or key fob (four supplied); the lock can be set up and operated without the use of an app, but if you choose to use the app, you will be able to assign users, view logs, and give access to temporary users; if power is lost, it can be opened using a physical key, or a power bank and a micro-USB cable
Lockwood's 001TouchPlus Smart is a surface-mounted deadlatch. It can be operated using PIN, key fobs (two supplied), or a smartphone app, as long as you set up the supplied Bluetooth module so the app can see it. The lock can be set up and operated without the app, but if adding multiple users, using the app will be easier. There's no visible lock barrel on the outside (and no hidden emergency key), but if power runs out, a 9V battery can be used to temporarily unlock the door.
Yale's Assure Lock Keyed is a smart lock that can be set up directly from its keypad to work with PIN codes. It's supplied with a Bluetooth module that has to be installed if you want to use the lock with the Yale Home app, and this is desireable for managing multiple users, and if you want to unlock the door with your phone. There is a visible lock barrel on the front face, which means it can also be used easily as a regular lock with a key, and it would be wise to carry the key as the lock has no backup power method for when the batteries are drained (despite the supplied manual stating you can use a 9V battery).
This is a deadlock that can be operated using an app (via Bluetooth), or via fingerprint; the app must be used to set it up; if power is lost, it can be opened using a physical key, or a 9V battery
The Aqara U100 Kit comes with a small USB bridge that allows this otherwise Bluetooth lock to sit on a Wi-Fi network. With the bridge installed, the lock can be controlled via its app, in addition to its physical keypad. There is a mechanical key that's concealed on the front of the lock, and if battery power runs out, a powerbank can be plugged into the USB-C port on the bottom. The bridge also allows the lock to integrate with Alexa, Google Home, and Siri, so you could use your voice to unlock your door if you are so inclined.
This is a deadlock that can be operated using an app (via Bluetooth), fingerprint or key fob (two supplied); the app must be used to set it up; if power is lost, a power bank and a USB-C cable can be used to power it; there is no physical key option
This is a surface-mounted deadlock; it can be operated using PIN, key fobs (two supplied), or a smartphone app; the lock can be set up and operated without the app; the Android app did not work at the time of testing, but we had no problems with the iPhone app; there is no physical key backup, but if the power fails, then a 9V battery can be used to operate the lock and facilitate entry via the PIN method
