Expert tester comments
AVG Secure VPN has a slick user interface with minimal settings, making it easy to use, but it does include links to other AVG products you can purchase. Its performance was very quick to its Australian servers, using the default WireGuard protocol.
AstrillVPN makes use of the OpenWeb protocol, which by default only funnels Web browser traffic through the VPN. However, it can be changed to use either OpenVPN or WireGuard. It produced very fast performance when connected to its Australian servers in our tests. Its interface is small and not reflective of the very high price this service commands, which is the highest in our test at $307 (plus foreign exchange fee).
AtlasVPN was very fast when connected to its to its Sydney server, using the default WireGuard protocol. It can be used on an unlimited amount of devices for a reasonable price.
CyberGhost VPN uses the IKEv2 protocol by default, but it also supports OpenVPN, and WireGuard. It has an interface that has many features, including ad blocking, but they are not as easy to find as they should be. Performance was very fast to its Sydney server.
ExpressVPN has a clean interface with lots of features, and it supports many VPN protocols, including IKEv2, OpenVPN, and Lightway, which is the default protocol. It was very fast in our tests when connected to its Sydney server. While good, it is rather costly.
HideMe uses the WireGuard protocol by default and it performed very well when connected to Australian servers. It has plenty of features in a cleanly laid out app, but it's on the expensive side.
Hotspot Shield is a costly VPN. The initial auto-connection is to the USA, but it's very easy to change to a local server, and we found its performance was very fast when connected to its Australian servers, using its default protocol, Hydra.
IPvanish was very fast in our tests when connected to its Australian servers, using the WireGuard protocol. Its kill switch will prevent accidental Internet usage outside the VPN, even if the app is disconnected manually; it was one of the only VPNs in our test to behave in such a way.
IVPN is a service that can be purchased without signing up. You are given a code that is your account number, and you apply credit to that code. If you need support, only then do you need to sign up. It produced fast download speeds from its Sydney server, using the WireGuard protocol. One of the only downsides is that you can't use the service on more than two devices at the same time.
Ivacy's Windows application was flagged as a threat by Windows 10 and Windows 11 when we downloaded it. In order to install it, we had to contact support, who then sent us a lower version to install.
Malwarebytes VPN has a neat app with clearly laid out features. It produced fast performance when connected to its Sydney server using the WireGuard protocol.
Mullvad is a service that can be purchased without signing up. You are given a code that is your account number, and you apply credit to that code. If you need support, only then do you need to sign up. The default server was Sweden in our tests, but performance tests to the service's Australian servers were very quick using the WireGuard protocol.
NordVPN is one of the few services that does not support PayPal as a payment method, so you'll have to supply your credit card details. It was a very fast performer in our tests, using the NordLynx protocol by default to its Australian servers, and it has some good features, including an effective ad blocker.
Norton Secure VPN produced very fast performance to its Australian server using the WireGuard protocol. It doesn't have an ad blocker, but instead claims to be able to block ad trackers. It was the only service in our test to not incur a foreign exchange fee during purchase.
PrivadoVPN has a neat interface that supports Wireguard in addition to OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols. It selected WireGuard by default for our tests, and produced very fast performance to its Australian server.
PrivateInternetAccess has a very good set of features, including an effective ad blocker. It produced very fast performance using its Australian servers and the WireGuard protocol. Its interface is one of the few to show plentiful connection details, including protocol and encryption details, making it a good one for the curious.
PrivateVPN has a nicely laid out interface that is easy to use. It defaults to Sweden when you first try to connect, but it has Australian servers, which produced very fast times in our download tests. It defaults to the OpenVPN protocol.
ProtonVPN has an attractive and feature-rich interface, and it performed very well when connected to its Australian servers. Its cancellation procedure is instant, so if you cancel the service immediately after purchase in order to halt auto-renewal, the service will be downgraded to the free version and your payment will turn into credits that can only be used to buy the service again.
PureVPN has a set-up procedure and app interface that may be a bit confusing, as it asks what you specifically want to do with the VPN. It uses the WireGuard protocol by default and its performance to Australian servers was very fast in our tests.
It took a while to get StrongVPN running as the supplied credentials did not work and we had to contact support to figure out how to access the account. Otherwise, it's a VPN that performed quickly to its Australian servers using the WireGuard protocol.
Surfshark produced very fast downloads from its Australian servers using WireGuard. It's a VPN with good features, in particular an ad blocker, and there's no limit on the amount of devices you can use it on simultaneously. It's a bit confusing to buy, as it offers extras, and the price was not consistently displayed throughout the purchase process.
TorGuard was a fast performer when connected to its Australian servers using the default WireGuard protocol. It has the ability to block ads, and this was effective during our tests. It's one of the few services that can't be purchased using PayPal.
TunnelBear has one of the cleanest and easiest to use interfaces, at the expense of a rich feature list. Nevertheless, it is a useful VPN that was very fast when connected to its Australian server. It's one of the few services that does not support PayPal.
VPNUnlimited worked quickly when connected to its Australian server using the WireGuard protocol. It has an interface that isn't as easy to use as others in the test.
VPN.ac produced good speed to its Australian server, using the OpenVPN protocol, but we had to select that manually as it connects to Amsterdam automatically.
VeePN presents an app that has good clarity and ease of use. It hosts plenty of functions, including an ad blocker that was effective in our tests. Performance was very fast to its Sydney server using the WireGuard protocol. At just over $109 per year, it is on the expensive side.
VyprVPN's interface is neat, and it uses WireGuard as its default protocol. It's quick and easy to use, but we did experience issues with reconnections, which took a long time to get an IP address.
Windscribe was fast when connected to its Australian servers, using the WireGuard protocol. It's a well-featured VPN with a good interface, and it has effective ad blocking and content filtering.
Iolo's VPN service has very limited features. You can't pick the protocol to use, and it doesnt have a kill switch. Furthermore, support tried to upsell us without helping to resolve our issue. There is no way to cancel auto-renewing payments without contacting support. The privacy policy is not strictly about Iolo's VPN product, and there is mention in the VPN's FAQ that connection times can be traced back to the user.
