This was one of the firm favourites amongst our testers. It doesn't have the torquiest motor (50Nm) but still manages to climb very well, only becoming unstuck on the steepest of tracks. Its power assistance is delivered smoothly, and it's confident handling meant our testers found it great to ride through town. It has skinnier tyres and less suspension travel than other bikes that have more of an off-road slant. That makes it easier to ride on the road while still being capable of tackling smoother off-road tracks. The Roam doesn't have the usual LCD screen you'll find on other commuter bikes. Instead, it has a simple display that only shows power level and battery life through a series of small LEDs. We thought this simple design was fine, but it is polarising – you'll either be OK with it or bemoan the lack of speed, distance travelled and other ride information. Ultimately the Giant failed to meet the threshold for our recommended tick due to its lack of commuting features it doesn't have lights, a rack, mudguards or a kickstand. We think these features are essential for convenience. The bike has all the mounts needed for these items. A Giant dealer could fit them, so for about $250 you could set up the Roam E+ GTS to be a more-than capable commuter and trail bike.
